Vatopedi is the usual name used for “Vatopediou Monastery”. It comes from the abundance of brambles around it. (Bramble = βάτος Vatos and Field = πεδίον pedion) that is field with brambles. Another spelling is Vatopaidion with different etymology. Vatopedi was the only place in Mount Athos that adopted (after 1923 when the Greek state adopted it) the new (Gregorian) calendar. The rest of the community in Mount Athos are still following the old (Julian) one. I was then told that the monks of Vatopedi accepted the use of the new calendar in exchange (from the Greek state) of some fishing rights around the peninsula of Athos. ___________________________________________
Βατοπέδι, από την αφθονία βάτων στη γύρω περιοχή. Απαντάται και η γραφή Βατοπαίδι με άλλη ετυμολογία, αλλά λιγότερο συνηθισμένη. Η Ιερά Μονή Βατοπεδίου ήταν η μόνη που υιοθέτησε το νέο (Γρηγοριανό) ημερολόγιο το 1923, σε αντίθεση με την υπόλοιπη μοναστική κοινότητα του Αγίου Ορους που ακολουθεί το (παλαιό) Ιουλιανό ημερολόγιο. Σε ερώτηση μου για τη διαφορά αυτή, ο Αρχοντάρης μου είπε ότι ατό έγινε σε αντάλλαγμα, από την Ελληνική Πολιτεία, κάποιων αδειών αλιείας στη χερσόνησο του Αθωνα.
